I sent open invitations to interesting people. It was worth it – and it might be much easier than you think. Five short conversations showed how much can be achieved simply by listening and sharing, with no agenda.
Networking is worth it.

A Midpoint Reflection on Networking – Five Conversations, Five Lessons
This blog was inspired by a small personal experiment: I decided to start networking openly and with a low threshold – no agenda, no selling. Just listening, sharing, and learning.
So far, I’ve had five conversations with five unique professionals. Here’s a short reflection – and hopefully, encouragement for you to try it too.
How Did I Do It – Where Did It Start?
Open invitation: I sent a short message or a contact suggestion (email, MS Bookings).
Low threshold: 15 minutes is easy to find (staying on time keeps it light).
Listening and sharing: No sales pitch, no hard goals – just mutual listening and open dialogue.
Below are the five encounters – each one taught me something valuable.
1. Deep Expert in Procurement, Systems, and Change
Description: A precise and thoughtful discussion partner with broad and deep expertise. A career path built on values and a “from good to better” mindset.
Lesson: Details matter. Expertise doesn’t shout – it speaks through substance, dignity, and the ability to elevate the conversation.
2. The Performance-Based Procurement Pro
Description: A rich and multi-layered career story. A mindset that focuses on procuring performance and impact – not just goods and services.
Lesson: Performance-based procurement thinking could – and should – be applied to regular procurement. Focus on outcomes, not just deliverables.
3. The Sales Leader – Master of Clarity and Directness
Description: A conversation that was immediate, open, and direct – yet warm and respectful. Strong experience in turning information into customer value.
Lesson: Authenticity works. Being clear and direct builds trust fast. “To the point” can be deeply customer-oriented.
4. The Impressive Sustainability Consultant
Description: Incredibly clear thinker who can turn complex sustainability themes into sharp insights. Deep subject expertise and strong networks.
Lesson: Creating value requires clarity. Complex topics must be made simple – that’s when understanding and impact emerge.
5. Experienced Sourcing Expert in Microelectronics
Description: A long career and entrepreneurial mindset combined into an inspiring mix. A strong ability to spot and act on opportunities.
Lesson: Experience isn’t just about years – it’s about how they’re used. An entrepreneurial attitude makes sourcing a strategic, business-driving activity.
Final Thought: I Encourage You to Try
Networking doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. When you give just 15 minutes of your time and come with an open mind, you might gain insights, inspiration, and new perspectives.
My encouragement:
– Send a message to someone whose thinking you admire.
– Schedule a short talk – it doesn’t have to be perfect or planned.
– Listen, share – and you’ll likely learn more than you expected.
Networking is worth it. Networks aren’t just contacts – they’re conversations that shift your thinking.
Network differently – send a connection request or make a call!
