“What don’t we see even though we should?” - Strategy and procurement

Why does strategy work often feel difficult – and how can you make it your own? For me, the answer was the power of questions.
When strategy felt out of reach
For a long time, I hesitated to participate in strategy work.
It seemed like something that required special knowledge, confidence, and fluency in a particular language. Terms like mission, vision, strategic goals, and roadmap felt heavy – as if they were reserved for a select few.
And more than anything, I feared that if I ever had to facilitate strategy work, I would fail. What if I couldn’t guide the process? What if I didn’t know what to ask?

What didn’t I see – even though I should have?
Everything changed when I began to approach strategy through questions.
I stopped trying to master the language and returned to the basics. I started asking simple but essential questions:
Why is this important? (business goal)
Why are we doing this? (mission)
Where do we want to go? (vision)
Why now? (timing and relevance)
Who cares about this enough to be involved? (stakeholders and team)
Suddenly, the strategy that had felt abstract and complex became practical and real. The questions brought it down from the slides to the people.
Strategy is now one of my strengths – because I don’t pretend to know, I ask
I’ve learned that the best strategies aren’t created through declarations – they’re discovered through dialogue.
When I work with clients, I don’t bring fixed answers – I bring better questions.
These questions force – or rather invite – clarity:
What really matters?
What are we aiming for?
Who needs to be involved?
What’s the timeline and focus?
This approach works whether we’re defining, refreshing, or challenging a strategy – for a business, a procurement function, or a category.
Summary: Better questions, better strategy
Strategy work doesn’t require jargon or hierarchy. It requires the courage to ask and listen – and the patience to let answers evolve.
If strategy feels difficult, don’t try to solve everything – start asking.
Soon enough, the path forward begins to take shape.
